RETAINING RINGS
Installing retaining rings into an assembly limits the motion of moving or rotating parts. They come in two forms, depending on the application, and can be removed with specific tools. External retaining rings slide into a machined groove and fit over a shaft. This helps keep free-floating shafts from slipping out of the assembly and keeps any parts attached to the shaft. Internal retention rings aid in keeping parts inside the assembly by fitting into grooves on the inside of a hole. They are employed in applications like hydraulic cylinders where maintenance or disassembly is infrequent.
